Students will explore the dynamics of good composition building with blocks of value, shape and colour with several small studies using an impressionist approach to to colour choice and paint application. They will push the concepts from their first day to a larger scale and learn how to manage details within a value range that will preserve and protect the original structure and expand on initial colour concepts.

Sharon Barfoot guides an exploration of the pochoir printmaking method, which uses stencils that are inked in solid colours and layered face up on a plate.
We will start each class with a short demonstration and discussion about techniques, then create a piece using the techniques and palate we create. Over the course of the four classes each artist will create their own colour chart to take home.
Join Cheryl Vance for an immersion in tradition embroidery techniques which can then springboard your own projects after the course. Students will begin with fundamental concepts such as embroidery styles, fabric choice, correct use of hoop, needle and thread, and design transfer.
Discover the pleasure of carving soapstone. Soapstone is a very soft stone that can be carved with simple hand tools. In this course you will be introduced to the process of carving and finishing a basic soapstone carving.
The first day of this workshop will begin with transferring a lighthouse image onto a half sheet of watercolour paper; applying masking fluild and light washes of watercolour paints. A layer of melted wax is applied and the paper manipulated to create the distinctive crackled look of batik.
This immersive course in encaustic techniques will include an introduction to the medium, history, safety, using heat to fuse the encaustic to wood boards, and an introduction to image transfers.

An artist's "toolbox" skill, stretching your own canvas opens the possibilities of sizes and shapes, increases portability and lends itself to tailoring the quality of materials to your individual needs.
Participants will assemble a stretcher, cut the canvas to size, stretch the canvas hand tight, and tension the canvas with the keys. The UCS Impress round frames will also be demonstrated. It's a completely different stretching design that requires no stapling or folding.

Paint handling, paint mixing, clean colour, brush and palette knife handling techniques, the painting process for alla prima, "all in one session” oils, seeing the subject in layers from dark to light, all with an impressionist approach will all be part of this 2 day class.
We will layout over the 3 days approaches, methods and techniques for successful, engaging and as I like to look at it, joy filled painting time. Process, analysis, planning and successful execution of several painting exercises with a view to a finished larger piece on day 3.
