Canvas stretching Techniques with Upper Canada Stretchers

October 7, 1PM - 3PM | All Levels

An artist's "toolbox" skill, stretching your own canvas opens the possibilities of sizes and shapes, increases portability and lends itself to tailoring the quality of materials to your individual needs.

Participants will assemble a stretcher, cut the canvas to size, stretch the canvas hand tight, and tension the canvas with the keys. The UCS Impress round frames will also be demonstrated. It's a completely different stretching design that requires no stapling or folding.

Shallow Frame Willow Basket

An excellent first basket for beginners. Participants shape a rustic frame out of fresh willow, add ribs & weave rows of willow forming optional handles. This 30cm dish shape makes a beautiful natural centrepiece or practical harvesting basket. Learn the skills to explore basketry using materials from nature. All materials included & tools provided.

Encaustic Ornament Set

November 29, 1PM - 4PM | All Levels | Ages 16+

Make three one-of-a-kind tree ornaments using encaustic. This ancient medium mixes the sweet smell of beeswax with a tree resin to make it harder and durable. The wax is coloured using specialized pigment blocks or oil paint. Using a blow torch you’ll create swirls of colours as a background. Finish off your ornaments with an image transfer of a tree, star, and snowflake.
