Discover the pleasure of carving soapstone. Soapstone is a very soft stone that can be carved with simple hand tools. In this course you will be introduced to the process of carving and finishing a basic soapstone carving. Instructor John Novak leads students through selecting their stone and subject matter, working the stone block with saws and rasps from basic shapes to details and finishing stecniques such as wet and dry sanding and wax finishes. John will have several basic carvings as examples, provide tool and technique demo's and individual attention. No prior carving experience is required!
Learning Outcome: Transform a 2 dimensional image into a 3 dimensional version on the stone and remove the bulk excess stone in a block way, how to use simple rasps and rifflers to do the detailed carving, how finish your carving to a satin lustre revealing the full colour of the stone. we will also explore options for texturing the stone afterwards to provide alternative finishes.
