Encaustic is a very old technique using pigments and wax to "paint" and this course marries its otherworldly, ethereal characteristics with photography. Participants are shown how to mount photos on substrates and use a mixed media approach to either convey the personality of their photographic subject matter or simply play with aesthetic values. Instructor Amelia Kraemer has a joyful, contemporary approach to the medium driven by her love of paper ephemera and the ability of encaustic to unify all of your creative components.
*Note: Students must print their own photographs and purchase birch panels of an appropriate size to mount them on. Maxium size of panels should be 11" x 14". Bring two photos printed on watercolour or rag paper and two on regular printer paper. Photos printed on standard photography paper will NOT work.
Learning Outcome: Introduce participants to various mixed media products and ways of working with them. Introduce the participants to encaustic and how to create a smooth finish. Have students make one-of-a-kind personal art of which they are proud.
