Our Call to Artists deadline is today! Head to our website and find the “Join Our Artists” page, the application is easy! It is absolutely fantastic to see so many unique, talented and passionate artists, from just beginning to very accomplished, interested in participating this year. 😍
What were we thinking not just making a “my dog” prompt?! Congratulations to the lovely Maria of @mymindfulworld, who is the random winner of the “Portraits & Figures” prompt. Thank you also to those who submitted these charming faces! 😍Don’t forget our last prompt of this initiative is “On the Move” and due by Sunday night. #southamptonartswinterphotofest
We are now re-opening March 13 instead of the originally planned March 6. We are very excited to welcome you back to the Arts Centre, but our original plan has been slightly delayed, due to the ongoing renovations. When we do re-open, the lower levels of the Arts Centre will remain closed for another few weeks, but the Henderson Room will be open to view work by our current Permanent Members and two special features, the first of which is described below. Kevin Spreekmeester has graciously donated seven of his stunning images in print as a fundraiser for Southampton Arts. Each photograph reflects Kevin's eye for capturing time and location through the camera lens, a technical process that belies the emotional resonance imbued in the chosen moments.

Our sincere gratitude to Kevin for his generosity in sharing his story during his talk in January and support of our mission through the donation of these prints. Each print has been professionally framed by @jennyleelearn JL’s Custom Framing with brilliant white, wide matting and a clean, contemporary white wooden frame.

These striking works of art are available by silent auction with 100% of proceeds supporting our arts programming for children and seniors. Opening bids on all pieces are set at $150 and bids must be made in $25.00 increments.

Bidding will close March 28 at 4 pm.

To bid, visit the Gallery during opening hours or comment on the Facebook Gallery of the framed images being posted this weekend.  Ever since he was little, Kevin Spreekmeester has told stories. His journey as a storyteller included a flirtation with acting and sports casting followed by what he considered “hard labour" in advertising agencies and marketing shops. He eventually found his stride as an award winning photojournalist which led him to visit all seven continents. He later met the owner and CEO of a small outerwear company called Canada Goose. Kevin was convinced to join them when they were still small and unknown. Over the following ten years, as CMO, he helped create a story that would change the landscape of the global outerwear industry, Canadian brands and many lives around him, including his own
Our last prompt in the #southamptonartswinterphotofest is “On the Move”, due by next Sunday at midnight. Life is not static. We, and the world around us, are actually alive and constantly changing. How can a photograph express this truth? How can a two-dimensional snapshot of time tell us the story of life, of movement? Don’t forget to tag us by midnight tonight in your “Portraits and Figures” prompt images!
3 of 3. Located on the main floor, the Exploration Room houses our extensive Art Library, promotional materials from all of our Artist members as well as upcoming class materials and two feature walls for presentations by local artists. There are 12 Exhibition calendar spots for this space x 2 walls, to support up to 24 local, emerging artists presenting their work in the Gallery. This is a great opportunity for those who have not worked through the process of presenting their work in a formal setting, who have a small body of work, or who are assessing their audience. You must be local (Grey/Bruce/Simcoe/Lake Huron connected) and apply in either the Supporter or Permanent Member categories to access the Exploration room exhibition opportunities. While Southampton Arts does not currently pay CARFAC fees (except for special features) and artists must pay a modest fee ($60 - $95 annually), once chosen for an exhibition opportunity we will support promotional and opening reception costs for your feature. By applying to be an artist member, you support a vibrant organization trying to support a diversity of artistic paths and needs while investing in the advancement and amplification of your creative career. Let us know any questions you may have...and don’t forget the deadline to apply is March 5!
2 of 3. The big double doors facing Albert Street are no longer in use, but were thrown open each morning and evening as the town firetruck went about its business in the days that this space served as the Town Firehall. Today, this intimate, ground level space adjacent to the Saugeen Shores tourism office and overlooking the Gateway to the Arts and the School beyond, is available for exhibition proposals from groups, individual artists or curators. Fire Hall’s physical parameters encourage the appreciation and consideration of art in a quiet space and creating “conversations” between pieces, across the angles and close sight lines of the room. It is a perfect space for a solo show or presentation by a collective. There are three four week long exhibition periods available ; June 9 - July 4, September 8 - October 3, October 6 - 31, November 3 - 28. In the high season, opportunities in this space are shortened to 2 and three week periods because of the dramatic difference in sales potential. The high season periods available are July 5 -18, July 19 - August 1, August 2 - 15, August 16 - September 6. It’s important to note that you MUST apply by March 5 to be considered for any of our exhibition opportunities. You do not need to become a Permanent member and can instead apply to the Associate category. Please review the different artist member benefits on our website. You do not have to be local for Henderson and Fire Hall exhibition opportunities. *Fire Hall flooring is being upgraded this month! 1 of 3. The deadline for applications for new artists and exhibition proposals is coming up March 5. It’s exciting to see the talent interested in contributing to the legacy of Southampton Arts and our vision moving forward! Aside from drastically reducing fees for permanent members, making having your work for sale here both more accessible and potentially more lucrative, we are very proud to be supporting a new exhibition structure. Exhibitions can be proposed for three distinct areas, each with qualities that suit different presentations of ideas and stages of artist development. As a sales based gallery without entry fees, we have a unique niche in the community for your work. We have had many questions about the spaces and exhibitions and this series of three posts is offered to clarify your ideas, peak your interest and welcome you to considering exhibiting with Southampton Arts in 2021! The first exhibition space available is our bright and beautiful main floor Gallery, named after the founder of the Art School, Bert Henderson. The Henderson room suits exhibition proposals from groups, professional curators or those interested in organizing a thematic presentation, or artists working at a professional level. The two primary feature walls are expansive and require work that can visually anchor the space. The wide open area can be staged with gallery style presentation of fine craft, sculptural work or installation ideas.  The Henderson room is available for three, month long periods in 2021; September 8 - October 3. October 6 - 31 and November 3 -28. Henderson room applicants do not need to be local to Southampton but must sign exclusivity agreements that restrict exhibition of the work in their show in a similar gallery setting 60 days before and 60 days after exhibition dates. This clause does not apply to selling work directly through your studio, online or at pop up events.
“She Wore Blue Velvet” by @kellymawfloralartist . 30” x 40” $1100. February days of sunshine and softer temperatures remind us the stark winter landscape will again turn over to the luscious, elaborate architecture of flowers.
