Service Description

Encaustic Painting Weekend with Marianne Gibson Learn the art of encaustic painting in this fun and informative weekend workshop. Create a number of small paintings by applying a mix of beeswax, tree resin, and oil paint to wood and fusing them together with heat. Saturday will include an introduction to the medium, safety, making the medium, using different heating tools (encaustic iron, heat gun and blow torch) to fuse the encaustic to wooden boards and an introduction to image/photo transfers. Sunday will cover more intermediate topics such as experimenting with collage, creating different textures, and the challenge of making a smooth surface for image transfers. Students are encouraged to test out a variety of techniques and discuss their pieces with their classmates as they learn from each other. At the end of each day we discuss your favourite painting and your most challenging one. You’ll find this medium to be one of the most versatile and fun art forms out there. No experience necessary! Materials Fee: $100 payable to the instructor at the start of class. Optional Materials: We provide a large number of black/white images to choose from when learning image transfers. You may bring your own small black/white or colour high resolution photos/images (5" x 7" or smaller) if you wish - printed on photocopy paper with a laser copier "mirror image" required if transferring words or you don't want your image flipped. 2-3 copies of each image. Please respect copyright laws and use only images that you own or are public domain.
